Epping Forest had been reduced to something like its present size by Roman times; the wood-pasture system was probably introduced by the Anglo-Saxons and the legal forest created at about 1100 AD. Land use between 1200 and 1350 involved deer timber and grazing, the occasional felling of large trees and the pollarding of many. There was a survey of trees in 1604. Geo Abstr (abr) |
