Abstract:
Three articles on Scottish historical geography begin with I A Morrison giving an outline treatment of Scottish prehistory in its geographical background, complementing this with perceptual maps showing (eg) the 'view' from the Celtic West and from the feudalizing southeast; then R A Dodgshon comments on the post-1100 landscape, the growth of population forcing expansion, infilling, and complex cropping routines; finally G Whittington outlines the development of the burghs from the scanty evidence so far available, though St Andrews with its good documentation and excavational evidence offers good chances of full understanding.
