Abstract:
Up to now the New Archaeology, most notably presented by Binford, has had relatively slight impact on European archaeologists because of its alien approach and terminology; but the time has come to consider how to extract from it some useful concepts and procedures. We have too often, for instance, misunderstood the real nature of "explanation", and we have been over-preoccupied with "cultures" insufficiently defined. A possible line of advance might be to play down regio-centric archaeology and to identify base units usable for synthetic and comparative study, for which the concept of the "adaptation group" is proposed. This comprises a number of habitation groups which, differing in detail, show general uniformity in their basic structure and adaptation to the environment. The "adaptation groups" could then, it is hoped, be used for wider studies of larger cultural units ("civilisations", "spheres" or "traditions") or for comparative behaviour studies.
