Abstract:
Reviews some recent debates in the epistemology of archaeology and the questions they raise about the role of evidence in deciding questions about the past. The importance of theory, and the need to be aware of the foundations of our theories, are emphasized and issue taken with some of the recent ideas of J-Cl Gardin and A Gallay on these subjects. Some distinctions proposed by the sociologist Runciman between different kinds of understanding in the social sciences are adopted. Finally it is suggested that debate about theory and evidence in archaeology may be made more rigorous by the use of artificial intelligence approaches, in particular by 'arguing expert systems' of the kind recently proposed by A Stutt.
