Abstract:
Describes some problems encountered in constructing the National Museum of Scotland database. 'Any reorganisation of museum documentation is largely a process of coming to terms with the institution's past. The weaknesses of existing records have to be accepted, and their strengths exploited.' The system needs to be able to retain valuable detail and provide the means of understanding changes in terminology (eg lunulae/lunettes, Drinking Cups/Beakers, etc). Identifications change, but all those made by scholars of standing should be kept available, with their dates.
