Abstract:		 A paper from Stadtarchäologie in Deutschland und den Nachbarländern: Ergebnisse, Verluste, Konzeptionen (a 1982 conference in Münster) summarizes the history of British town archaeology - the CBA's Erosion of History (1972), the 'implications surveys, etc - but expresses pessimism about the future. The lack of unifying theory, the largely arbitrary availability of sites to dig and of money to dig and publish them, the multiplicity of excavation units, all militate against a coordinated research programme. However, the list of 'Research priorities for urban archaeology' produced by the CBA's Urban Research Committee in 1978 offered a programme for a more rational means of proceeding, especially in conjunction with rigorous site evaluation such as Carver proposes.
