Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A sample of thirty European tombs was examined metrically to determine the ratio of tomb space to monument size and therefore to indicate, for any given monument, whether its primary function was storing the dead or impressing the spectator. It emerged that the passage grave was most effective as a repository and had little potential for display; hence, perhaps, the rise in importance of the long mound with its impressive profile, carefully designed exterior features, and also increased (more efficient) internal capacity. Such impressive monuments add to the status of the leader responsible for their erection, provide a focus for ritual and for the group territory, and confirm the leader's power through his relationship to the entombed dead. | ||||
