SX 702841. The house is a well-preserved, typical Devon longhouse whose development can be traced through surviving details, both primitive and sophisticated. The structure is of granite ashlar, continuous at the hall-shippon junction. Three original roof trusses remain, two with short crucks. Over the originally open hall, first-floor chambers were jettied out (?later 16th century), with addition of full upper flooring and probably the chimney in ?17th century. The shippon retains many details; it was originally separated from the hall only by a low partition, and its separate external doorway is either an unusual original feature or a very skilful insertion. The round-head and shouldered-head doorways suggest first half of 16th century for the original house. Some details of the other farm buildings and the hamlet are given. |
