Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Brief interim report on the Limehouse porcelain factory, documented from c 1744-8, and located at 108-114 Narrow Street (Dunbar Wharf). Excavations found the remnants of the porcelain kiln (not like the Staffordshire examples) and recovered quantities of kiln furniture and porcelain waste from all stages of manufacture. The decoration is underglaze blue with no polychrome, and there is a wide variety of forms (including some new ones). Some wares formerly assigned to William Reid of Liverpool can now be re-attributed to the Limehouse site, and close ties with the Pomona (Staffs) factory are evident. All the problems found by the Limehouse potters had to do with the glazing process, with bubbling and opacity as well as warping (see also 91/853). |
