Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Clearance and excavation in 1951 revealed the plan of the ruined church. Documentary evidence shows that a church existed on the site in early 12th cent: this fell into disuse in later 17th cent and was burned down in 1745. Traces of an earlier floor level, unconnected with the visible walls, were noticed. The present structure, assigned to c 1225-1250, has nave proportions and an internal length closely comparable with those of the short Romanesque churches of mainland Scotland. Various structural details of, and alterations to, the chancel, nave and laird's loft are discussed. A sculptured cross showing Christ beneath a Manus Dei was found re-used in the loft walling. This stone was not closely datable but stylistically it can be compared with late Saxon roods in S England and, more closely, with manuscripts and ivories of the Winchester school. Small finds are listed and include late medieval pottery, window glass, nails and slates. An appendix describes seven medieval tomb-slabs. RNB |
