Joan du Plat Taylor was instrumental in bringing nautical archaeology to the Institute from the 1960s onwards. Work on key wrecks like the Mary Rose and Grace Dieu spurred the Council for Nautical Archaeology's campaign for statutory protection of historic wrecks. The Int J Nautical Archaeol was founded in 1972, the Nautical Archaeology Society in 1981, and the Institute's Underwater Research Group has promoted the SE coastal register of wrecks in the Marine Archaeological Survey. |
