Abstract:
The extent and variety of gold resources in the British Isles have been largely overlooked during an analytical survey (see abstract 72/1317) of prehistoric gold objects in Europe. A new detailed survey of Irish resources, and more briefly of those in England-Scotland-Wales, has demonstrated the widespread geological and geographical distribution of ores. One analysed stream sample from N Ireland has a composition similar to that of the lunula, a class of object suggested by Hartmann to derive from Wicklow gold. Any useful interpretation of artefact analyses must be preceded by much more work, preferably by X-ray fluorescence analysis, on the ores as well as the artefacts. Au(adp)
