Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Recent work at several sites in the New Town area of Northampton is summarised. At Ecton work ahead of gravel quarrying recovered around 200 Neolithic pottery sherds and 200 worked flint flakes, although the only structures seen were a hearth and two post-holes. At Blackthorn a multi-phase prehistoric enclosure was investigated. Two prehistoric enclosures were also investigated at Moulton Park, one of which contained traces of hut circles. At Overstone, excavations uncovered the remains of a probable Roman farm complex arranged around a stone cobbled yard. At Horsemarket a probable kiln group of pottery vessels, apparently of Saxo-Norman date, was discovered. At Weston Favell the excavation of foundations for a house uncovered ditches and walls of a medieval building. At Greyfriars, excavations on the site of the Franciscan friary of Northampton revealed part of the church and one of the north--south ranges, possibly the dorter. A pipe trench along Lady's Lane uncovered walls interpreted as remains of the precinct walls of Whitefriars. Work at the Castle, Mayorhold and the medieval St John's Hospital site is also mentioned.
