Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Booklet presenting the findings of excavations undertaken in 2012 by SLR Consulting, in advance of development at the site of a 19th century carriage and iron works at Openshaw, Manchester. The background to the project and the historical context of the site are outlined. The history of the Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Company is then traced before the results of the excavations are described. Examples of wagons and carriages produced by the works are illustrated, including several surviving within museum collections or at heritage railways. A short discussion of working conditions at the works follows, based on contemporary newspaper articles. A final section gives a brief account of excavations at a separate site encompassing the north-eastern part of the works, undertaken by Oxford Archaeology North in 2014. The importance of potential future work on the remaining portions of the works is emphasised. LD |
