Abstract:
As part of the Markeaton Park Restoration Project, Derby City Council plans to incorporate the remains of the 18th century Markeaton Hall, demolished in the 1960s, into a new garden layout. A community archaeology project, with professional input from Trent & Peak Archaeology, has been working to expose and record the entire footprint of the hall. Former outbuildings within a courtyard have also been investigated. This article outlines the historical context of the site, describes the hall and discusses the findings from the excavation, which included fragmentary evidence for a 16th century hall on the same alignment as the later house.
