Abstract:
The evidence from scattered excavations undertaken over several decades in Catterick is brought together and assessed. The evidence of both settlement and burial indicates activity in the early Anglian period. Indications of status and ethnicity are discussed, and set within their historical context. The pottery is examined by J Evans, T Briscoe & N Reynolds (7--10 & 12--15) and the buildings by P Cardwell & P R Wilson (10--12). The excavations on the north bank of the Swale are discussed by J S Wacher & P R Wilson (16--20) and the pottery from here by J Evans (20--2). The work at RAF Catterick in 1994 is described by R H Taylor-Wilson (22--6) with the finds of pottery by J Evans (27), bone and antler objects, the fired clay objects and the ironwork by C Buckley & R H Taylor-Wilson (27--9), R J Cramp describes the funerary evidence from RAF Catterick as excavated in 1966 (29--30) with comments from S Anderson on the skeleton (31--2) and J Evans on the pottery (31). The burials are discussed by P R Wilson A Thompson, Q Mould, E Crowfoot, T Waldron & J Watson (31--45). The excavations on the Catterick Bridge site are examined by P R Wilson, S Thubron & D Thubron (45--7) and the Cataractonium site by E J W Hildyard (47--9). J Evans reports on the Anglian pottery recovered from Prof. Wacher's Roman excavations (49--50). A Bayliss contributes an appendix on the radiocarbon dating.
