Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Archaeological investigations of a number of small sites, combined with information provided by antiquarian writers, indicate the existence of a number of churches and/or cemeteries in the vicinity of Rippon Cathedral. In two cases these demonstrably originate in the eighth century or earlier, and in the other less well documented instances an early origin seems likely. It is suggested that these sites are ecclesiastical nuclei associated with the known seventh-century monastery at Rippon, and a tentative reconstruction of the original monastic enclosure is proposed on the basis of archaeological, antiquarian and cartographic evidence. Gillian Fellows-Jensen writes on placenames (66), J Langston considers the skeletal evidence (93--9) and J Ottaway the ironwork (99--113). J Watson looks at the construction of the chests/coffins (113--14) and J Price at a fragment of a glass bangle (114--15) whilst N S H Rogers examines a copper alloy object (115). A MacGregor comments on combs and comb cases (127) and D Tweddle provides a catalogue of the worked stone (128--9). R A Hall, E Patterson & C Mortimer comment on the Rippon jewel (134--6). | ||||||||||
