Abstract:
Excavation of a Romano-British trackway ditch revealed a plough-damaged grave which produced fragmentary skeletal remains and an assemblage of copper-alloy and iron grave goods typical of a female Scandinavian burial of the Viking period. The grave-goods include a non-matching pair of oval `tortoise' brooches, the design and condition of which suggest a date for the burial at the end of the ninth century, and isotope analysis of the teeth suggests a Norwegian or north-eastern Scottish origin for the woman. Investigation of the grave-goods has provided information on manufacturing techniques and costume. Previous discoveries nearby and the results of geophysical survey suggest that this is one of a widely dispersed group of burials, some of which could be of Roman date. Includes
