Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A watching brief on groundworks at a development site in Kendal was undertaken by Greenlane Archaeology. This note considers documentary evidence for the development of the area before describing the findings of the watching brief. It is suggested that the medieval finds recovered had been deposited in fields belonging to the grange, which were subsequently developed into 'burgage' plots from the 16th century onwards. Based on the archaeological evidence, use of the term 'burgage' and the depiction of properties on historic maps might not always be an indication of medieval origin. LD | ||||
