Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
For many years, fieldwalking on the site has produced pottery, coins, brooches and other artefacts from all periods, but the main focus of activity appears to have been between the Bronze Age and the Anglo-Saxon period. A ring-ditch has been interpreted as a Bronze Age burial monument, pits and pottery have been attributed to the Iron Age, and palisade trenches, various metal objects and coins appear to date to Roman times. The find of a hoard of six gold staters with a possible votive significance found at a crossing point of the River Rhee 1km to south of site is noted with possible links to a communication route. Apart from the Bronze Age burial mound the site was re-used as a cemetery in Anglo-Saxon times but there is one burial which has been dated to the first century AD. The site is discussed in its regional context with an emphasis on the Iron Age. There are separate sections on: `Pottery' by Morag Woudhuysen (33--8) and an appendix on `The decorated pottery: is it Iron Age or Anglo-Saxon?' (50--3); `Faunal remains' by Simon J M Davis (41--6); `Human remains' by Corinne Duhig (46); `The environment' by Peter Murphy (46). | ||||||||||||||||||||||
