Abstract:
During the 2004 excavation season at the Old Vicarage, Mellor, Stockport, a remarkable example of an Early Bronze Age flint dagger was found. Mellor is a multi-phase site, and it is possible that the dagger has been disturbed from its original context. The dagger is described in some detail, and the occurrence of flint daggers in the British archaeological record discussed. It appears that Early Bronze Age communities living along the western side of the Pennine uplands acquired flint daggers, such as the one at Mellor, through exchange networks. It is suggested that further work should aim to develop our understanding of the extent to which Early Bronze Age communities at the interface of the lowlands and the Pennine uplands participated in these exchange networks.
