The site of Mestesforde at the time of the Domesday Survey has been considered to be at Matlock Bridge. It and other reasonably feasible fording sites were examined with respect to the local topography of the Derwent Gorge, and the likely medieval transport linkages revealed by footpaths and place names, One site in particular, entering Matlock Town via the Ladygate, has not previously been suggested, but appears to be a preferable alternative to the bridge for the ford site. | ||
