Abstract:
The author translates and interprets inscriptions from a number of Roman stones recovered in Chester, including altars, fragments from monumental inscriptions, centurial stones and tombstones. It is observed that none of the monuments found recently in the north wall of the city is of later date than the second half of the second century AD. Some historical context is given to support the suggestion that the city walls were enlarged during the reign of Septimius Severus, reusing some material, including tombstones from about a century earlier.
