Abstract:
Report on the excavation of the fort, its history and setting, including: excavation of the fort, which was situated on a triangular promontory between two rivers. Excavated remains from 1976--92 included parts of the principia, the praetorium and street in front of them; two granaries; small buildings in the north-east area of the fort; lengths of the via praetoria and other streets; parts of the northern fort wall and intervallum street; and extra-mural features beyond the north wall. The results of other excavations, from 1929 and from 1995--6, are incorporated into the report. The standing remains of the medieval castle are also located on the promontory, as are various nineteenth- and twentieth-century buildings. The fort was constructed in the late second or early third century. Seven main periods of activity were identified. Two phases of pre-fort agricultural activity were followed by a construction phase. The layout of streets was subject to modifications during the main phase of the fort. The last two phases cover the abandonment and decay of the fort and earliest Anglo-Saxon activity.
