Abstract:
Following extensive trial excavation in advance of development a 50m square area was excavated north of the road where evaluation suggested prehistoric occupation. Early Neolithic pits and a possible small circular structure were recorded, along with a distinctive group of Late Neolithic/EBA pits. One of the latter contained 183 sherds of pottery, including fragments of seventeen different Beakers. A fragment of hazelnut shell from this pit yielded a radiocarbon date of 2500--1950 cal. BC (95.4% confidence). Quantities of worked flint, including tools, were found in association with both the Early Neolithic and Late Neolithic/EBA features. This evidence for prehistoric activity was overlain by a probably RB field boundary or enclosure system. There are separately authored notes on
