Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A programme of archaeological work carried out in advance of a proposed housing estate on land off Meadowlands Avenue, Barrow-in-Furness revealed several features of interest in a geophysical survey. These were subsequently examined by targeted evaluation trenching and two areas of 'strip and record'. A group of small pits was revealed in one area, one of which was radiocarbon dated to the Neolithic. The form of the pit group, assuming they are all of the same date, is suggestive of a short-lived structure, and seems similar to another excavated nearby. A collection of linear features in another area related mainly to land drainage; one culvert was partially built of dressed red sandstone reused from nearby Furness Abbey. The reuse of stone taken from Furness Abbey after the Dissolution adds to examples in the locality. | |||||||||
