Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
At the beginning of February 2016, a substantially preserved, cobbled road carriageway of probable Roman date was unexpectedly revealed during archaeological monitoring of works to extend the Northumberland National Park car park at Housesteads. This newly discovered road was located near the National Trust Information Centre, in the narrow strip of land between the existing car park and the northern verge of the B6318 ‘Military Road’, some 0.50 km south-east of the Roman fort. This probably formed part of a route heading eastwards which, ultimately, connected the fort to the Stanegate at Grindon Hill Farm near Settlingstones. The circumstances of the discovery and a full description of the findings are set out in this report, which provides an opportunity to reassess what we know of the southern periphery of the Roman settlement and, in particular, the road network associated with this important site on Rome’s northern frontier. | |||||
