Abstract:
This article presents the results of archaeological works conducted in advance of a development at Redburn Row, Chilton Moor, Sunderland. Two waggonway tracks were recorded, an embanked track to the west and an unembanked one to the east. The embanked track was the earlier, dating from the 18th century, and had remained in use until the late 19th century. The lower track was a later addition, dating from the 1820s, and had been built with iron rails. It was only used for a short time before being abandoned without modification; it therefore presents a clear example of early iron rail technology. Two phases of a domestic coal depot were located to the east of the embankment, the latter phase was cut into the side of the embankment and partly truncated the lower track. A 19th century housing terrace was also excavated elsewhere on the site. All features were covered by coal waste overlain by clay, deposited as a 20th-century ground remediation measure.
