Abstract:
Between late 2017 and early 2018, excavations revealed significant multi-period occupation and funerary activity on land to the west of Brampton, from the middle Bronze Age to middle Anglo-Saxon periods. The Anglo-Saxon remains consisted of a settlement dating from the sixth and possibly into the early seventh century, with four sunken-featured buildings probably linked by a north-west to south-east routeway. After abandonment, a small cemetery was established, consisting of twelve inhumations all aligned roughly east to west, seven or eight of which were interred with grave goods, which dated two burials to the later seventh century. Earlier remains identified within the excavation area comprised a small middle Bronze Age flat cremation cemetery of nine individuals, part of a late Bronze Age to early Iron Age unenclosed settlement and a small rural middle Iron Age to early Roman farmstead. This paper is focussed on the Anglo-Saxon settlement and burials.
