Abstract:
The form and location of Etheldreda’s famous early monastery at Ely has been the subject of great interest for gen-erations. Yet its relationship, if any, with the reformed Benedictine monastery founded in the tenth century by Bishop Æthelwold remains uncertain. Prompted by a re-assessment of the evidence offered by Ely’s supposed pre-Conquest stone sculpture (undertaken for the forthcoming CASSS volume), this paper draws on important recent archaeological discoveries, and upon new approaches to the characteristics of early monasteries, to propose that Etheldreda’s foundation was a dispersed entity, conceptually encompassing the whole island, which related to its long-standing numinous character and ritual usage extending far back into pre-history. It builds upon these revised un-derstandings, using plan-form analysis, to dissect the mor-phological development of the later monastery and town of Ely, to propose a relationship between modern and the early Christian topography.
