Abstract:
Excavations to the east of Wideopen village in 2015–17 revealed three main periods of Iron Age occupation. Unenclosed settlement of probable Middle Iron Age date was followed by the creation of two ditched enclosures during the Late Iron Age. Once the main ditches had become disused and silted up, the enclosures were subdivided and accompanied by further unenclosed settlement. Large fields and a trackway were laid out to the east. The final settlement phase continued into the early Roman period. Artefacts recovered included hand-built pottery, a beehive quern, Roman ceramic building material and a disc hand quern. The results from the excavation complement the considerable corpus of evidence for this period derived from several other recent investigations in the immediate area.
