Abstract:
Excavations by F.G. Simpson at Chesters and Great Chesters in 1921 and 1925 were important steps towards our present understanding of Hadrian’s Wall and its structural history. His work soon led to abandonment of the idea that the forts on the Wall had originally been built as part of an earlier frontier system based on the Vallum. Other aspects of his excavations need to be reconsidered. Simplifications of the structural sequences at Chesters and Great Chesters are proposed in this paper, clarifying some aspects of the overall building programme for Hadrian’s Wall.
