Abstract:		 Large assemblages of Late-Norse vegetal-tempered pottery have been recovered in recent excavation and survey projects in Caithness. This paper examines the need for complementary experimental archaeology and refined scientific characterisation if our understanding of the organisation of local pottery manufacture is to be more clearly understood.
