Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The late pre-Roman Iron Age mirror from Old Warden (now in Bedford Museum) is described in detail, with particular regard to its workmanship. The forms, workmanship, ornament, and dates of manufacture of this and other mirrors are reconsidered. The multiple-looped mirror-handles are seen to be Italian in origin, while the single-looped form is shown to be a British innovation. The difference between them is probably cultural rather than chronological. The contexts of the Bird lip, Colchester, Nijmegen, and St Keverne mirrors are shown to be first-century AD. The "typological" method of analysing pre-Roman Celtic art in Britain is challenged, and it is suggested that more account should be taken of individual experimentation by contemporary smiths. | |||
