Abstract:
Excavations were undertaken on the former Peacocks Yard and Salvation Army sites, in advance of redevelopment for the Howard shopping centre. Evidence of Saxo-Norman/Early Medieval occupation was encountered right across the site, and included numerous rubbish pits, a well and two well-houses. In addition, the long rectangular pond shown adjacent to the Saffron ditch on John Speed's map of Bedford in 1610, was located and sectioned. An absence of Medieval finds and archaeological features was noted westward towards River Street. Four trenches were excavated on the site of the Empire Cinema, Midland Road, and occupation evidence from the ninth to fourteenth centuries was recorded. The largest trench, 1, fronting Midland Road, contained a ditch with running water, and several pits and gullies of tenth to twelfth century date. Material and organic remains indicated that iron-working, horn-working and some copper-working were undertaken on site or close by, as also were farming, with animal husbandry, and domestic occupation. Structural features including limestone wall-footings represented a twelfth or thirteenth century dwelling on the corner site, trench II. Some inconclusive pre-Conquest settlement evidence was also present. The east side of a large ditch (twelfth to fourteenth century) was found in trench III, running north-south and lying partly under the line of Allhallows. The remains of wooden joists which once supported a building were uncovered in trench IV dating to the twelfth century or earlier.
