Abstract: |
Part One is a discussion of Neolithic chambered cairns in this northern part of Scotland, covering the development of the study of the cairns, their environment and setting, the morphology and terminology relating to the passages and chambers, and the structure and morphology of the cairns. Also discussed are the history of use of the cairns, the sealing of the chambers, the associated artefacts, and the dating, orientation, and relationships of the cairns. Part Two is an inventory of the sites, giving each cairn a site description, location, history, references, and in most cases a site plan. Appendix 1 (152--4) consists of sites previously published as chambered cairns but not included in the inventory. Appendix 2 (155--6) is a description of human bones from excavations at Embo, and Appendix 3 (157--8) is a note on the location of finds at the Ord North cairn. |
