Abstract: |
An account of Roman occupation in the Milton Keynes area, close to the centre of Catuvellaunian territory and traversing Watling Street. There are details of the Iron Age background and changes in the archaeological record attributable to the initial Roman presence in the wake of the Claudian invasions of AD 43. An outline of Romanised governmental structures in the area places Milton Keynes in the pagus centred on Magiovinium (Fenny Stratford). There are details of the extent and nature of lines of communication and the impact of expanding farming activity on the landscape with the introduction of a consumer society structure. From the late first century AD onwards the appearance of villas can be seen. There are details of Bancroft villa excavations and shorter notes on Wymbush, Stantonbury, Dovecote Farm, Holne Chase and Sherwood Drive at Bletchley, and Stanton Low. Despite the essentially agricultural nature of the area throughout the Roman period there is evidence of pottery and tile production, some smithing and coin forging represented by the Magiovinium coin forger's hoard. Religion and ritual are attested to in the form of Roman temple structures as well as native ritual sites and finds. There is a list of further reading. |
