Abstract:
The 1996 Annual Academic Lecture for Groam House Museum compares the settlement evidence from three Orkney sites at Howe, Skaill and Pool, considering the routines of daily life from structural remains, artefacts and exploitation of the local environment. Significant changes in the archaeological record which appear to have taken place in the seventh and eighth centuries are identified; these may reflect fundamental political and social changes.
