Abstract: |
A collection of papers from a symposium on the information management problems resulting from the increasing amount of data being generated by the geosciences. Traditional cataloguing and indexing methods can no longer cope with this scale of information, and metadata systems are being developed to increase the availability of information, making it easier for people to find out what data exist and where, and what questions to ask of it. Divided into two sections, the first dealing with technical issues and the second with a number of case studies from different countries and organisations. Includes Clive Ruggles & Ian Newman on `The MRRL's Meta-Information Retrieval and Access System' (187--210), a project aimed at improving the management and availability of social, economic and environmental information on the Midlands region of England.
