Abstract: |
Reviews previous work on colluvial dry valley fills in southern England along with sedimentological and molluscan data from the South Downs. To further investigate the variation in environment in land use with time and locality, a sampling programme was carried out on seven dry valleys and ditches from two BA sites on the A27 Brighton bypass. The morphological development of the valleys is traced from the Late Glacial (c 11,000 BP) to present and compared to that of the BA sites and the evidence synthesised. Large scale landclearance is evident in many areas prior to the Bronze Age, while in some areas the first evidence of agriculture is found in the Iron Age. |
