The results of a survey commissioned by EH from the CBA at the end of 1993. The survey aimed at quantifying ten areas affected by this activity: damage to sites; damage to excavations; scale of portable antiquities looting from scheduled monuments; volume of finds deriving from metal-detecting per annum; prosecutions and convictions for illegal activity; metal-detector sales 1988-93 and the number of detectorists (including those not registered at a club); artefact recovery 1988-93; use of metal detectors on archaeological excavations and fieldwork programmes and the impact on artefact recovery; a study of other benefits to archaeology.Numerous (fourteen) appendices detail: the detectorist questionnaires; legislation and controls; policies and statements by national bodies and local authorities; the National Council for Metal Detecting Code of Conduct; a code for thoughtful treasure hunters as published in Treasure Hunting (July 1982); statement from the National Council for Metal Detecting; finds in the literature; the Midland Archaeological Research Society; museums and detectorists; hoards at the British Museum; metal detectors owned by archaeological units; public perceptions of metal detecting and archaeology; metal detecting on scheduled ancient monuments; illicit metal detecting at Corbridge [incident log]; followed by a bibliography.
