Abstract: |
Investigates alluvial sediments associated with archaeological sites on the floodplain of the rivers in the upper Thames catchment basin. Consideration is given to the various factors influencing sediment erosion and deposition within a lowland river catchment basin including both environmental and anthropogenic factors. Experimental analysis is undertaken on sediment samples collected from a number of sites in the river basin and conclusions are drawn as to the validity of the experimental methods used. The use of statistical techniques on particle size data is examined, and conclusions are made as to the most appropriate statistical analyses to apply to the experimental data. The individual archaeological sites sampled are appraised in the light of the results of the sediment analysis and conclusions are drawn for each. The results of the study are considered in relation to other work in the region and conclusions are drawn regarding the relationships between this form of analysis and other techniques of palaeoenvironmental investigation. |
