Abstract:
In an examination of the applicability of neo-Darwinian evolutionary ideas to the human past, the author begins by looking at the influence of natural selection on human behaviour, and goes on to consider whether the same ideas can be applied to human societies, not just through the genes but through Richard Dawkins' concept of `memes', units of cultural information which are passed on through culture. Subjects discussed include life history theory, game theory, the origins of farming and the collapse of societies.
