Abstract: |
The importance of the Nene and Welland Valley gravels for prehistoric settlers has become clear in recent years, and many Roman features are being newly identified, especially near Peterborough and the industrial centres of Water Newton and Castor. The influence of early features on parish boundary layout, and of AS secular and ecclesiastical settlement on the modern pattern are considered, as are medieval fields, deserted villages, the Forest and the Fens. Concluding chapters treat the great houses and parks, enclosure, hedges, fen reclamation, turnpikes, canals and railways, and the towns. |
