Abstract: |
Papers from a seminar in March 1974. R Burleigh (pp 5-8) maintains caution as the number of 'correction' curves mounts. John Fletcher (9-27) hopes that European tree-ring dates will ultimately provide more accurate 14C corrections than the bristlecone pine. J H and B Ottaway (28-38) use 26,000 14C dates to test the reality of the wiggles in the Suess curve. A Snodgrass (39-46) uses uncorrected 14C dates from both the Aegean and Wessex to demonstrate a long overlap between the Shaft Graves and Late Wessex. H McKerrell (47-100) rejects the bristlecone pine calibration in favour of one based on Egyptian historical dates. A Fleming (101-8) rejoices that what seems a mere technicality (the correctness or otherwise of 14C dates) in fact allows a shift from unprofitable questions of chronological priority to the examination of the evolution of new developments within societies. |
