Abstract: |
Catalogue of an exhibition 'assembled to show the wealth of the ancient world as it entered into a period of barbaric invasion and taste' and including works lent from many collections to complement the British Museum's own treasures. The first editor provides a general introduction and the section on coinage and currency; the second editor writes of the 4th-7th centuries and the world beyond the Roman frontiers. Catalogue entries number 862 and there are several colour plates as well as numerous half-tones. Major British exhibits include the new hoard from Water Newton and the Mildenhall, Sutton Hoo and Traprain Law treasures; from Ireland have come the Coleraine Hoard and the Newgrange finds. |
