Abstract: |
Gazetteer of thirty-three cathedrals and forty-two greater churches, with brief details and ground plan at c 1:1200 for each, together with long introductory text incorporating new archaeological, engineering, art-historical, and liturgical research. The book 'seeks to examine the greater churches as a unity. It considers their origins, explores the methods and motives of the men who built and paid for them, and attempts to throw light on how they were used at different stages in their history'. |
