Papers from two conferences form the core of this collection. A short introduction to earth and timber castles is provided by E J Talbot (1-9), while J G Scott (10-20) discusses three late medieval swords. Late medieval defences in Scotland, ie those of 1371-1513, are given detailed consideration by G Stell (21-54) within the new, post-Simpsonian framework in which social, economic, and architectural considerations are given due weight as against the 'turbulence' model. Excavations at Threave Castle (Galloway) have provided evidence of one of the earliest surviving European artillery fortifications, mid-15th century (C J Tabraham & G L Good, 55-72). David H Caldwell (73-93) writes on royal patronage of arms and armour making in 15th and 16th century Scotland. A detailed consideration of artillery and major places of strength in the Lothians and East Border, 1513-42, comes from Iain MacIvor (94-152). The remainder of the work consists of articles on weapons and armour from C Blair, the editor, Sara Stevenson, J G Scott, G L'E Turner, W Reid, Stuart Maxwell, and R B K Stevenson. |
