Papers relevant to Britain and Ireland include: in Section B, Archaeology in legislation, government, and planning, Ann Hamlin on 'Government archaeology in Northern Ireland' (the nature of the archaeological resource and its management). M Eddy, in 'Medieval towns in Essex', describes the production of Historic towns in Essex (1983) which identified twenty-four towns with archaeological potential and offered guidance on their future planning. P Lavery describes 'The development of a strategy for Hadrian's Wall', ie for the controlled exploitation of its touristic potential. In Section C, Training and qualification of archaeologists for cultural resource management, A Saunders writes on 'Training archaeologists for cultural resource management' with particular reference to English Heritage. P V Addyman considers 'The role of the professional institution', the formation of which (IFA) took a decade of work. Nicole Labarre offers 'Quelques remarques sur la pratique d'une base de données bibliographiques en préhistoire et protohistoire', on the specific problems thrown up during several years' experience with the FRANCIS database. In Section E, Cultural resource management at Stonehenge, P V Addyman makes some radical suggestions in 'The Stonehenge we deserve', being the Heritage Projects Ltd's scheme for a wholly underground interpretation centre adjacent to the monument. |
