Abstract:
Papers originally published in 1984 (as BAR Brit Ser, 4) are reprinted, most with afterwords to bring them up to date, but some radically revised. John Collis (1-12) opens with 'A functionalist approach to pre-Roman coinage'; Anne S Robertson (13-38) covers 'Romano-British coin hoards: their numismatic, archaeological and historical significance'; and John Casey (39-56) looks at 'The interpretation of Romano-British site finds'. Peter Curnow follows (57-72) with 'Coin lists: some problems of the smaller site', while R Reece (73-85) examines 'Clustering of coin finds in Britain, France and Italy' and also (86-101) 'Numerical aspects of Roman coin hoards in Britain'. Much new evidence has prompted G C Boon (102-88) to provide a fresh look at 'Counterfeit coins in Roman Britain'. John Collis (189-200) provides 'Data for dating' & J P C Kent (201-17) discusses 'Interpreting coin-finds'. Unrevised is the late S E Rigold's 'Coins found in Anglo-Saxon burials' but Michael D King's new paper (224-9), 'Roman coins from early Anglo-Saxon contexts' shows that the balance of interest has now shifted from burials to occupation sites, allowing a nationwide quantification of material. D M Metcalf (230-53) has extensively revised his 'Monetary expansion and recession: interpreting the distribution patterns of 7th and 8th century coins'. The late Michael Dolley's paper (254-63), 'Some thoughts on the manner of publication of coins found in the course of archaeological excavations' is left unaltered from the 1974 version. Marion M Archibald (264-301) makes a plea for archaeologists to view realistically 'English medieval coins as dating evidence'.
